"Sunday night wrap-up"

College football
Well, the new BCS rankings are up. And waddaya know, but the Trojans are back in the thick of things. Here are the top 10 spots in the rankings, heading into The Game Week.

1 Ohio State 1 2800 1.0000 1 1574 .9994 24 25 23 20 23 23 .930 3 .9765 1
2 Michigan 2 2688 .9600 2 1513 .9606 25 24 25 25 25 25 1.000 1 .9735 2
3 USC 3 2458 .8779 4 1373 .8717 21 22 22 23 21 20 .860 4 .8699 7
4 Florida 4 2441 .8718 3 1381 .8768 22 20 21 21 18 18 .800 6 .8495 4
5 Notre Dame 5 2267 .8096 5 1273 .8083 20 19 20 22 22 22 .840 5 .8193 9
6 Rutgers 7 2024 .7229 8 1082 .6870 23 23 24 24 24 24 .950 2 .7866 13
7 Arkansas 6 2234 .7979 6 1248 .7924 18 16 15 19 17 17 .680 9 .7567 11
8 West Virginia 8 1864 .6657 7 1113 .7067 16 17 14 15 14 15 .600 11 .6575 10
9 Wisconsin 11 1678 .5993 10 928 .5892 17 21 18 17 20 19 .740 8 .6428 15
10 Louisville 10 1711 .6111 12 884 .5613 19 18 19 18 19 21 .750 7 .6408 3

I know, I know - tons of numbers. What you basically have to know is this: if USC wins out, it's most likely in the title game. The Trojans' remaining schedule is too strong. They play Notre Dame and Cal, two of the top 15 teams in the country. Even a close loss by UM or Ohio State probably won't beat out the Trojans.

Behind USC it's a bit messier. Florida and Notre Dame have a chance, but not Rutgers. Unless The Game isnt' a game, and USC, Florida, Notre Dame and No. 7 Arkansas all lose.

And even then, well you never know. Should be interesting these next few weeks. And damn exciting. Things won't be decided until the final Saturday.

College basketball
We got our first big upset of the season (gosh I love upsets). Virginia christened its new arena with a 93-90 victory over No. 10 Arizona. Will it mean much in the grand scheme of things? I'm proud to say, "Yes." The NCAA tournament committee will look at this win and view it as a "quality win" and, I know I'm being bold here: Virginia makes the tournament.

Arizona, meanwhile, with a wealth of talent - but still young, except for Mustafa Shakur - will grow leaps and bounds and challenge UCLA for the Pac 10 crown and a No. 1 seed in the Big Dance.

NBA
There's no doubt who's playing the best basketball right now: the Los Angeles Clippers. After their fifth straight victory Sunday afternoon, over the upstart New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, the Clippers are 5-1 and atop the Pacific Division, a game up on the surprising 4-2 Sacramento Kings. And the Clippers aren't just winning. Their +7.7 point margin per game is second in the league to Houston's +8.0 (the Rockets, 5-2, are also hot, having won four in a row, including a 94-72 fourth-quarter route of the Heat on Sunday).

It's scary to think how good the Southwest Division in the West is going to be as the season progresses. Right now, the division looks like this:

San Antonio 5-1
Houston 5-2
NO/Oklahoma City 4-3
Dallas 2-4
Memphis 1-5

This division could easily have four playoff teams, all of which could contend for a tile (except maybe the Hornets, who still lack a go-to big man). Memphis is the only dud in this group, but once Pau Gasol returns, the Grizzlies could string together some wins also. Watch out for this division. It and the East's Central Division are the toughest in basketball.

All right I'm out. Enjoy the winning-record Hawks while they're around.
